Section: History, Schools   |   School: Grammar School

The Story of History series covers the flow of history from Bible times through the 20th century, providing students a backdrop against which they can better engage the Great Conversation. Grammar School students get to know the heroes, villains and key events of the period using both biographies and selected works of historical fiction as well as nonfiction narrative histories (where available).

Christendom comes to life as students in this course explore historical, geographical and cultural knowledge of the Middle Ages, approximately AD 500 to AD 1450. From the fall of Rome through the Renaissance, students watch God’s plan unfold as He moves through nations and empires. By providing an overview of medieval history, this class prepares students for subsequent Bible and history courses through the development of attentive listening, close reading, thoughtful interaction and oral narration. Students create their own timeline, practice cartography skills, complete map projects, present on favorite historical characters and more.

Topics include: the fight for power in Western Europe, the religious wars between Christians and Muslims, the influence of the Christian church and the economic and cultural effects of feudalism.
